Moving out, Manila, and such

So it is official, I am now living on my own here in Buenavista!  I moved into my apartment on Tuesday and this past week I have been really busy buying tons of stuff for my place.  It is a really simple apt. with concrete floors, a tiny kitchen, with a smaller bathroom.  I took some pictures and I will try and post them on here at a later date.  My friends had a house warming party in which we cooked fish and rice and we used a cardboard box as a table.  It reminds me of my college days thinking you have almost everything you need for your place, but reality smacking you in the face when you realize you dont even have a table to eat food on.

I have been gearing up for our assessment of our MPA this week to. My counterpart and I went to the site and I did some snorkeling to familiarize myself with it.  However, the visibility was really low and I had to swim a good 400-500 yards to get it.  We will have two boats taking us to the 6 different points of the MPA so we will be assessing those 6 areas in the "core zone" to get baseline data.  I hope the mayor will be able to throw some money at this project because it is my main goal here.  I will start writing a VEG grant starting in April after we have a training.

I was at Morgan's site a few weeks ago which was really fun.  Except for the fact I had explosive diarrhea the entire weekend we managed to have a good time.  We went to this mangrove island one day, hung out at a few resorts, and I was able to meet many of her friends.  They made burritos the last night I was there which was a great meal too.  We ended up going to Manila with this guy that lives down at Morgans municipality on the weekends.  It is about a 2 to 3 hour drive, but 1 hour into the ride his car started to overheat and we had to stop every 5 mins to put more water in the radiator until we reached a mechanic.  We finally made it to Manila and we stayed at our favorite pension house and I ran into this British guy that I had met through another PCV.  So, we all went to this reggae concert thing because apparently it was Bob Marleys birthday.  It was one of the cooler experiences that I have had here in the P.I. because usually Filipinos like 80's rock and pop music like Lady Gaga and such.  Morgan almost managed to put her cigarette out on my knee which extremely unpleasant, I still have the blister to prove it... We got our butts out of bed early the next morning to watch the Super Bowl which was a great time too, started at 730 in the morning.  Overall a good time was had by all and am looking forward to my next trip back to Manila.  Gotta cut this post short because I was only able to grab this computer for 30 mins.

  3. Hey Robert,

Sounds like things are going well. Congrats on the new apt. At least your apt. in Milwaukee prepared you for something like that! You probably don't have to worry about noisy radiators.

Also, wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday! I don't know if you'll be able to check messages on your birthday. Hope you're able to treat yourself to something tasty. Well, take care of yourself and Happy Birthday!

  4. Happy Belated Birthday our eldest 26yr old. Remember those teens birthdays when you had explosive beets coming from the mouth instead of your crack. I know you educated me on the LBM for loose but the explosive takes my visual to a new level!! Hope there was toilet seats and ass wipe at the resorts you went to. Glad you saw the SuperBowl was a good game thought the steelers were going to get 6 at the end. Glad to hear you have your own roof/straw overhead even if it is small its yours. Milwaukee put your expectations in place you need for the Philippines living. The snow this winter has been huge and bitter cold. I know your sweating but take the heat over the cold any day. Glad to see the MPA is coming around. Did the other PCV get approved? That would be nice. Nothing like a few Marley tunes to "STIR UP" the explosive tummy and get Morgan's cigarette waving in the crowd! Keep working towards those MPA goals and stay on the local government wallet. Happy Birthday, speaking of 80's rock not the Ga Ga but mom and I are going to Supertramp at the Pachanga casino tonight. First concert in years! Saw them freshman year at Norberts they rocked!
Colin was recognized for his 3.65 GPA at the polo banquet but they are NOT going to hungry but we are! Already got the tickets and hotel canceling would cost a bunch. Need Orsi's help in Budepest for 4 full days! Searching for Goulash and a stein on the Danube!
Be safe in this world of revolution! Some Rage Against The Machines!Bye Bye

  5. Crazy stories man. I'm sure the explosive D isn't the first spell you've had over there. Happy belated bday, welcome to 26. Pretty nuts how life seems to go faster as we get older doesn't it? Jon, Rick and I took our gfs up to Jon's parents cabin this past weekend. The place looks awesome compared to when we first went, we got some decent snow on saturday too.

I'm not sure if any of the guys have told you but I think this year's trip is gonna be backpacking in big sur. Should be pretty cool, hopefully the weather will work with us...trip is mid May. So now that you've got a solid 6 months under your belt you gotta hit us up with some good fish recipes...sounds like that is the STAPLE over there. I'm glad you're safe man, take care of yourself and enjoy the new pad.

  6. Glad you were able to celebrate your 26th B-day with friends. We missed you! Defeinately different than any of your previous B-day celebrations.
Sounds like work is taking off.
Charm those fishermen with your great smile.
Now that you have glasse they may think you are smarter than them. Enjoy your new apartment, simple but it works. You don't have much cleaning to do, that is a good thing.
    Love you! Mom
